January is one of the best months to visit Maui. While much of the mainland is in the middle of winter, Maui is warm, green and in the heart of humpback whale season. Here is what to expect from Maui weather in January and the best ways to spend a winter trip on the Valley Isle.

January is one of Maui's cooler months, but cool is relative. In Kahului, average daily highs are about 81 degrees F and overnight lows about 65 degrees F. The ocean averages about 76 degrees F, warm enough for swimming and snorkeling.

  • Rain: January falls in Maui's wetter winter season, with about 1.8 inches of rain on average in Kahului. Showers tend to be brief, and South Maui (Kihei, Wailea and Makena) is usually the driest and sunniest part of the island.
  • Daylight: about 11 hours, with sunsets a little after 6 p.m.
  • Upcountry and Haleakala: temperatures drop with elevation. Kula and Makawao are noticeably cooler, and the Haleakala summit can fall below freezing at sunrise, so bring warm layers if you plan to go up the mountain.
  • Surf: winter brings large swells to north-facing shores, so check ocean conditions and swim at lifeguarded beaches. South- and west-facing beaches are generally calmer.

Peak Humpback Whale Season

Humpback whales return to Hawaii each winter to breed and give birth, and January through March is the peak of the season. You can often see whales breaching and spouting from shore in South and West Maui, or get a closer look on a whale watching boat tour.

Fewer Crowds After the Holidays

Maui is busiest from mid-December through New Year's. Once the holidays pass, the island quiets down a bit, which can mean easier dinner reservations and more room on the beaches.

  • Watch the sunrise from Haleakala National Park (sunrise visits require an advance reservation from the National Park Service).
  • Drive the Road to Hana, where winter rain keeps the waterfalls flowing.
  • Snorkel at Molokini Crater or along the South Maui coast on a calm morning.
  • Explore Upcountry farms, shops and galleries in Kula and Makawao.
  • Experience Hawaiian music, hula and local culture at events around the island.
