A monument commemorating Vancouver's connection to the area stood for many years along the North Kihei coastline. While historians differ regarding the exact location and circumstances of his landing, his voyages remain part of the fascinating maritime history surrounding Maʻalaea Bay.
The Legacy of Maʻalaea
The name Maʻalaea itself predates Vancouver and is Hawaiian. It has been translated by noted Hawaiian scholar Mary Kawena Pukui as "ocherous earth beginning."
Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge
Immediately north of Kihei lies one of Maui's most important remaining coastal wetlands: Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge.
The refuge protects habitat for native and endangered Hawaiian waterbirds, including the aeʻo (Hawaiian stilt) and ʻalae keʻokeʻo (Hawaiian coot). Migratory birds traveling thousands of miles across the Pacific also make seasonal appearances here.

The beachfront facility provides exhibits and educational programs about humpback whales, Maui's marine environment, Native Hawaiian culture, and ocean stewardship. During whale season, visitors may even see humpbacks breaching offshore.
Adjacent to the sanctuary is Koʻieʻie Fishpond, a traditional Hawaiian fishpond estimated to be approximately 500 years old and one of the remaining examples of the sophisticated aquaculture systems developed by Native Hawaiians.
